Who knew ten years ago, Chris Messina’s first tweet “#barcamp” would evolve at a rattling speed and become part of our daily vocabulary? Today, hashtags have become an integral part of net discourse, with netizens often going berserk in creating content, peppered with the latest of trends. Not only that, hashtag have become a veritable tool for marketers to promote their brand and content into trending topics worth contention. The popularity of hashtag remains undaunted with an online explosion of a variety of emotions, captured in the significance of a few letters. Often considered as an extension of emotions and pulse of current occurrences, hashtags have become an indispensible part of a marketer’s dictionary, holding the powerful capabilities to churning viral fame out of a few letters. The dwindling attention span of consumers currently, guarantees the rise of such expressions which are easily communicable in the digital world, hence being an elusive ally in strategic digital campaigns.

#BlackLivesMatter: Four years ago, African – American activist community started a campaign against systematic racism and violence towards black people and used the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter on social media after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death. It received much attention online and was subsequently tweeted, re-tweeted by thousands of netizens to highlight the vulnerability of Black People in a democratic setting. It was a unique contribution beyond extrajudicial killings of Black people by authorities and vigilantes and narrow nationalism. It centred those that have been marginalized within Black liberation movements. It was a ploy used to (re)build the Black liberation movement.

#brexit: Everyone fixated eyes on television sets on the day of referendum results in Europe, the moment results were out everyone was gasping for breath. The European Union was crumbling before the eyes of the world. Britian decided to leave EU, the social media analyst went gaga and began discussing the repercussions of the #Bretexit, and it was shared by thousands on the same day online.

#IceBucketChallenge:  The common activity of dumping of a bucket of ice and water over a person’s head, either by another person or self administrated to promote awareness of the neuron related disease in America, this activity went viral in July-August 2014 on social media under the hashtag #IceBucketChallenge after prominent personalities, politicians posted their videos online and on TV participating in the event to donate money from the this challenge. According to reports more than 2.2 million people shared videos on twitter to accentuate the essence of donation for the neuron disease.

#TheWalkingDead:  It is an American post-apocalyptic horror television series where zombies disguised as living humans eat all those creatures producing sound including humans. This show has incredibly received well by critics and fans alike. This series after receiving many accolades and awards increased viewership online as well as offline and eventually began trending on social networking sites especially twitter. This is most shared, re-tweeted and searched hashtag from a decade now.   

#ThrowbackThursday: Throwback Thursday is a popular hashtag among social media platforms such as Instragram, Facebook and Twitter, Online Users often post nostalgia pictures of their past accompanied by the short form of hashtag #TBT, the term Throwback Thursday is attributed to anything in the past. This hashtag gained popularity due to its unique feature. The pictures, artwork of the erstwhile that has a unique attachment with humans encompassed large audience by searching through these tags accentuate their memories worth sharing on such platforms.  

At present, while above are the most iconic hashtags on twitter at the moment, an explosion of new and emerging viral terms are brewing at every second, making popularity intense yet fleeting.
